The Margaret’s Deck Tea Lounge is situated en route to New Jalpaiguri to Darjeeling. Once you start your journey from New Jalpaiguri to Darjeeling you will see posters and hoardings of Margaret’s Deck Tea Lounge all along the way. This is one of a kind tea lounge and the best highlight of the place is its breathtaking location. Nestled in the hills and surrounded by lush green tea gardens and a hot cup of tea, I don’t know if you need anything else in your life!

Where is it located?

Margaret’s Tea Lounge is on NH 55, Hill Cart Road and situated just near the Tung Station. It also comes under the zone of Darjeeling Himalayan Railways and you can see toy train tracks running just on the opposite side of the place. It takes around one and a half an hour drive from Darjeeling.

Most people don’t take a halt since the distance from NJP to Darjeeling is quite short and the roads are also not that bad. But when I saw pictures of this place and read all about it on the internet I knew I had to visit this place.

Margaret’s Deck Tea Lounge offers a wide variety of tea having various flavours to relish upon. The place is in fact a visual treat with its scenery, surrounding slopes of tea gardens, lush green hills and hot tea. If possible take a seat on the balcony for the best visual experience.

On most days you get a clear view of the scenery around but hills are unpredictable. Sometimes it remains foggy and you would miss the view. The pretty girl who served us tea commented “You are lucky as the sun has been shining continuously for the past few days”.

This spectacularly hanging like tea lounge has two styles of sitting arrangements- one the AC section and another the one with an open verandah where you can get the view and the chilling fresh air. Well the latter is my personal favourite as I don’t want to miss the view with a cup of tea in my hand. The AC section is furnished with vintage type furniture giving warm vibes.

But I couldn’t click any photos inside as there were guests with family and kids and I didn’t want to disturb their privacy. Well, a bad thing I see most often is travel bloggers doing clicking pictures disturbing other people’s privacy.

There are also photos hanging at the entrance where you can read in detail about the history of the place, the history of Goodricke, A Tale of Tea and lots more interesting stuff. Also, there is a counter from where you can buy Tea leaves for yourself and for gifts.

Being born and brought up in Dibrugarh which is also known as the Tea City of Assam I am quite a tea addict person. My morning never starts without my cup of red tea. I like red tea also known as “Lal Sha” in Assamese here in Assam and “Lal Cha” in Bengali. Margaret’s Deck tea lounge was absolutely my kind of place.

The place offers a beautiful ambience for travel lovers and tourists who likes to take a short break while travelling on a hilly road. And also for tea lovers and addicts like me, it’s nothing less than a paradise.

The view of the beautiful tea gardens spreading all around the cafe

The main aim of this place is to restore the rich heritage associated with Darjeeling tea. The construction of the lounge is in itself quite spectacular as how it looks hanging from a hill. To have this view you need to come outside the gate and watch from the main road.

You can select from a wide variety of tea. In case you are confused asked the staff and they will surely help you. We had the Turkish Mint tea and trust me it was very refreshing in flavour and taste. One Single Pot is more than enough for two persons.

You can order in Single Pot and Double Pot and the price range varies accordingly. Since we were on way to Siliguri for our bus we were in a fixed time schedule else I would have tried a few more flavours. My  husband consoled me saying “Let’s keep the other flavours for our next visit.”

Since it was quite early in the morning they hadn’t started their regular breakfast menu yet so we had the only available sandwich. For edibles, they have a wide range of Cookies, cakes, pies, Brownies, English Scones, etc to select from.

For tea the menu has three sections to select from the Bespoke Range, the Bada Saheb’s Selection, Goodricke’s Darjeeling Special. As I have already mentioned the range is so wide so for the better selection you can seek some suggestion from the staff around. They are quite friendly and helpful people around.

After ordering the perfect cup of tea all you need is to sit back and relax and enjoy the breathtaking view around. I suggest everyone visiting Darjeeling make a stop at Margaret’s Deck Tea Lounge. It’s a classic experience and the best place to take a break while travelling along the curvy roads in the hills.Hope you don’t miss visiting this place and take a stop and enjoy the breath taking view with a cup of tea in hand.
